“Oh, Dani girl. What did you do now?”

It was early on a Sunday morning, a week after she and Malcolm had gotten back from the car show, and she walked into the office to find his father. She knew he always came in on Sundays to pay bills and it was the perfect time to get him to look at her car.

And the most recent damage.

“Those trash cans weren’t supposed to be there,” she murmured. “Can you change out the taillight for me? Please? I don’t want to get a ticket.”

“You don’t want my son to see, either,” he teased, rising from his chair. “Otherwise you would have waited until tomorrow to show this to me.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah…I guess.” Together they walked out to the parking lot where she showed him the damage to the rear bumper. “I keep telling Mr. Mateo not to leave his pails so close to my driveway…”

Malcolm Sr. simply patted her on the shoulder before squatting down to look at her car. “Broken taillight, scratches on the bumper, and it looks like your rear quarter panel took a hit too.” Straightening, he glanced over at her. “You know I can’t fix all of this today.”

“I already bought the taillight. Can you switch it out for me and then we can talk about the rest? I can live with the scratches.” Her shoulders sagged. “We both know there’s no point in fixing them because there will only be more soon.”

Nodding, he placed an arm around her and led her back into his office. Once he had her seated, he leaned against his desk. “Want to talk about it?”

She looked at him oddly. “We just did. I hit the trash cans.”

“That’s not what I meant and I think you know it. I’m talking about you and my son. I heard about your spin with the Corvette.”

Unable to help herself, she hung her head, too embarrassed to look at him. “I really screwed up. I was so focused on wanting to drive the car that I didn’t really think about how it not only wasn’t a good idea, but how I didn’t know how to drive it.” She sighed. “Now Malcolm’s not talking to me–won’t even look at me–and…”

“Can I let you in on a little secret?”

She nodded.

“My son is overly cautious and needs to unclench.”

Okay, that was surprising.

Well, not exactly surprising–she’d been saying the same thing about him for years. It was just surprising to hear his own father say it.

“He seems to think the Corvette is some sort of game changer for us, but it’s not. Don’t get me wrong, it drew a lot of attention, but our business was doing fine before it and it’s going to continue to do fine once the new owner shows up to pick it up.”

Looking up at him, she frowned. “But I messed it up! That’s why it’s still here, right? There was more damage to it than Malcolm actually thought and it’s all my fault! That can’t look good for you guys–to have to delay delivery.
